Are you an animal lover?
The Humane Society of the United States is staging a pet photo contest to help raise money for their spay/neuter campaign. You can vote for your favorite pet by making a donation - or enter your pet in the contest to help raise money! I just entered mine...

sketch :: journal
I'm starting a new sketch/journal project this week. Making quick sketches or doodles, incorporating words, illustrating whatever I've been thinking about that day. Each one is on a 5x7 piece of mat board (I have quite a bit of leftover mat board stashed in a closet!) and I'll post them here as they're finished. Check out this post if you'd like to see where I got the idea, it's so inspiring!

I'm totally addicted to this music, thanks to a recommendation from my brother... I'll be listening to it all weekend while I try to get some knitting done!

Recycled Cereal Box Envelope Tutorial
I get so annoyed when I have to make a special trip for mailing supplies - especially when I'm just sending something small! I've modified my first recycled envelopes to be sturdy and mailable by using a cereal box as the raw material.
I used a greeting card envelope as a template and traced it onto my dissected box - put it right up to the box's opening flap, this way you create a natural flap for your envelope. Trace the envelope rectangle again underneath the one you just did. Then, add two side flaps to your first rectangle.
When you cut out your envelope it should look like this:
Next, I scored along the division between the two rectangles to make a clean fold. Last, fold up your envelope and use clear packing tape to seal the edges.

4th folder, 4th photo
I was tagged by Christina at The Sometimes Crafter to find the 4th photo in my 4th folder and post it - I have to say I was a little worried when I saw that my 4th folder is titled "Random." Anything could be filed away in there and, honestly, I couldn't remember even creating this folder! Luckily, photo number 4 isn't anything weird, and I actually remember the day that I took this picture. It was a cloudy, gray day in the city and suddenly I turned a corner and saw these bright geraniums growing out of street-level window boxes. It was wonderful.

Thanks for the tag, Christina! I'd like to tag anyone who would like to play along! Just leave a link in the comments section so we can find you!

graffiti can be art, ever heard of Banksy?
When I saw this on the U of A campus it really made me realize how graffiti-deprived I've been since moving here! The Berlin graffiti was one of my favorite things. Ever.
It's a bold statement, don't you think?

Drawings
These two drawings will be added to my art shop this week, although I love the way they look hanging over my work table. I finished them over the weekend and put them up so they wouldn't get buried under any yarn piles, and I have to say they look quite nice!
Each drawing is on a book page and mounted on corrugated cardboard I cut to size, gessoed, painted, and attached a hook to. I always mount things like this because I refuse to frame things - they must be ready to hang or else they get taped or tacked to the wall! It's just my way. : )

Cables
I've finished the first cabled footie (pattern from One Skien). I'm absolutely loving the way these footies turn out, more like a slipper than a sock.
I've been wasting some time looking over the Purl Bee project archives and making a mental list of patterns to try, like this beret and this tote. I've also been cramming in my last days of napping and reading - school starts on Monday!

Hello hello
It's a new year! Having a winter vacation has made me feel so refreshed and ready for another year of... who knows? I'm looking forward to seeing what happens. You probably haven't noticed, but the word "vegetarian" in my profile has been replaced by "vegan"! I've made the relatively painless transition with the help of a couple of new cookbooks found here and here.
Also, both of my Etsy shops have gone vegan with my decision to use only animal-free fibers from now on. I can't think of a better way to start the year.
This is a new piece that I started working on last week, I have more parts crocheted but not yet attached. This, and a couple of other pieces, will be added to my art shop soon. I plan to work on it a bunch today while I listen to This American Life podcasts (I am obsessed).
