swirling in the ether...

I can't believe it's already Friday! I've been so (wonderfully) busy that the week flew by. Last night night my husband and I went on a dumpster diving walk and then had fruit sorbet - it was so much fun!

Here are a few more fun things I've stumbled across this week:

An amazing zipper coin purse tutorial! I really love this one!

This nautical McCoy pottery bank - need it for my collection!

How to make a patchwork potholder rug with recycled t-shirts

breakfast never looked so pretty

Happy Friday!

in the mood to sew {and embroider}

I've been in the mood for some sewing and embroidery this week so I've been stealing a few moments here and there to whip up a few new embroidered notes for the shop. I think they are pretty cute!

thrifted gentleman

Now that I've moved to a different part of town, I have a "new" neighborhood thrift store! Well, it's not really in my immediate neighborhood but it is withing walking distance. I went there for the first time on Saturday to hunt for some new frames or wooden plaques to use for my crochet sculptures (especially round and oval shapes!). I found a few nice pieces, including a lovely oval frame that had this gentleman in it:

It's a reproduction printed on some type of cardboard material, but it really does look real until you turn it over! He's now leaning against my fireplace on top of a stack of books until I decide what to do with him. I think it was a great find!

*simple skirts*

Yesterday I learned to sew a skirt with a yoga-style foldover waistband! I googled around looking for knit skirt ideas and found this helpful tutorial. I had some cozy, drapey knit fabric in my closet that worked perfectly...

I also found another tutorial that calls for thrifted t-shirts and sewing with an elastic bobbin to make simple skirts. I think I'd like to try that project, too!

I'm knitting laaaace!

I'm doing it! I am knitting lace - and quite successfully, to my surprise! I decided to make the Cranbourne Scarf from Wendy Knits Lace because it's rated for an "adventurous beginner" and that describes my lace knitting skills pretty well : ) I am following the chart with no problem and have gotten into a nice groove...

Here is a photo of the finished scarf from the book... it's so pretty!

I will definitely be working on it this weekend!

I'm off to the post office and then to get a haircut (I love haircuts!) and some lunch.

Happy Friday!

stitches of different sorts

I've been busy filling orders lately (the good kind of busy!).... including some tiny black bows...

And today I am embroidering a few new mini notes for shipping tomorrow. This morning I managed to squeeze in some time for painting new bases for crochet sculptures.... I have to say that I am experienceing the perfect level of busy-ness this week : ) Not frantic, just always something to work on, something needing to be finished.

I hope you're all having a good week, too!

huzzah! (and oscar wilde)

Huzzah! Another soft sculpture has been finished! This is the project that includes the gorgeous "Sprout" yarn from the last post - the texture and color after crocheting remind me of buttered popcorn!

I have been listening to audio books of Oscar Wilde plays while I crochet this week... they are so clever I end up chuckling to myself on the couch like a crazy woman. Surrounded by cats. And yarn. Very crazy.

You can see more photos of this piece in my shop if you are interested!

I have been crocheting with this yellow-gold yarn and it is just wonderful...

...it's soft, chunky, organic cotton. The name is "Sprout" and it's by the Classic Elite brand... I think it would be perfect for fall and winter handknits!

book review // knitting lace

If there is one knitting book that I had to have for fall knitting this year it's Wendy Knits Lace! My goal is make some beautiful, elegant knits for myself that will also be appropriate for the mild climate here in Tuscaloosa. Lace knitting will be perfect because it's lovely, light and airy! I've knit some simple lace patterns in the past, but I really wanted to find some "Wow!" patterns to try this time around.

The patterns in this book are amazing! The kind of projects that will make you glow when someone gives you a compliment on your scarf and you say, "Thank you, I made it myself." You know what I mean : )

Another really important part of knitting books is photography and styling - gorgeous shots of finished projects are 50% of my motivation to start and finish my own versions! I really love the lush styling and saturated colors used in this book... just look at the beautiful coral scarf on the cover. So gorgeous!

Another great thing about this particular book is that there are a variety of projects to choose from: socks, cowls, scarves, shawls and gloves, too. You can choose a quick knit, like a pretty cowl, or get involved in a longer project like a luxurious shawl.

I walked over to the yarn shop yesterday afternoon to get some new yarn for soft sculptures and picked up some beautiful Auracania Lonco to start one of the projects from this book! I think I want to try the scarf from the cover.

I would definitely recommend this book to all of you knitters planning projects for fall and winter. If you are already a fan of books from Potter Craft, you'll know what I mean when I say that they are great quality and full of creativity and inspiring ideas.

a quick project!

So.... I have seen these really cut apple cozies floating around for a while and now I finally made one! I had some apples in the kitchen so I grabbed one (and some yarn and a crochet hook) and made up a little cozy. I even used one of my treasured owl beads to make a little loop-and-bead closure. Pretty cute!

It's an easy project to make up as you go along, so I really enjoyed it. I am super busy with crochet these days... one of my soft sculptures was in Etsy Finds a few days ago (yay!) so I need to restock the shop with fiber art after selling a few of the pieces. I have an awesome piece all in white that should be finished today! Then I need to pick out some more yarn tomorrow..... a trip to the yarn store!!!

Oh! And I have an awesome new knitting book to review for you, too! All of that will be coming up in the days ahead.

{i like to draw}

I like to draw. Even when I'm not sure what I want to make or whether or not it will look "good" when I'm finished. When I have a problem to solve or a question to answer, sitting down to draw for at least half an hour often helps me come up with the solution. I'm not sure what happens in my brain when I'm drawing, but somehow the problem is being tackled even when my hands are busy and my mind seems to be focused on the lines of my sketch. When I'm finished, the situation seems clearer and I usually know what I am going to do! Does this every happen to you?

I know that a lot of people are intimated by drawing, but you've got to give it a try! Even if you've haven't drawn in years or feel unsure about how to start. Here are three tips for getting started with drawing (and even getting addicted!):

1. Use the materials you like! I like markers. Sharpie markers, in particular. I know that they aren't very professional or whatever, but I loooove them so that's what I use. I like the wide line and the saturated colors, the way they feel on the paper. I also like thick, sturdy paper so that's what I use for all of my drawings. I recently got a big pad of bristol board that I cut into smaller pieces and it suits me perfectly. You may like colored pencils, charcoal, or a fine tipped pen. Just make sure that you love your drawing tools!

2. Use the colors you like! Back to the markers.... the sharpie markers I use come in all sorts of colors, but I can't afford them all. I invest in the colors I love the most and just can't live without - the ones that make me want to paint my wall that color and buy all my clothes that color! This means that I have three markers in different shades of turquoise... but I use them all the time! It's worth it because the are my favorites! I love to pull them out and color in big blocks of turquoise on my drawings.

3. Get a sketchbook that doesn't intimidate you! I have had my fair share of serious sketchbooks filled with serious paper. I and I never used them. It felt too serious! I didn't want to make a mistake. Now my sketchbooks are actually lined journals. They are inexpensive, unassuming, and there are already lines printed on the page so I don't feel afraid to make a mark on them : ) I just draw all kinds of crazy stuff, scribble, rip out pages, take notes, whatever I want. And I like it!

These three strategies helped me go from intimidated-about-drawing to I-can't-stop-drawing. I hope they encourage you to try it, too!

(I'm listing the cat drawings featured in this post in my shop today!)

//photo backdrop//

I've been playing around with a few ideas for a new backdrop to use when I photograph items for my Etsy shop. I like using plain white for a lot of items, but I also think it makes my shop more interesting when there is a fun background in some of the shots. I made this wall of notebook paper the other day and took some test photos... I really like it! It's still bright and neutral, but it's also playful and cute.

I'll post some more photos after I've made some new items and taken some "real" product shots!

I'm about to run over to the grocery store to get ingredients for a big Greek salad to have for dinner. I was browsing through a Jamie Oliver cookbook from the library this morning and that recipe jumped out at me (veganized, of course). Can't wait to eat it!

{recipe} iced green tea infused with mint

One of my favorite ways to cool off in the summer is with a glass of homemade iced tea. I've been keeping a pitcher in the fridge for most of the summer and I love infusing it with fresh, fragrant herbs from the farmer's market. I picked up a big bunch of mint at the market yesterday, so I thought I would share the way I like to make iced green tea flavored with this cooling herb.

I heat 2 quarts of water in my tea kettle and pour it in a pitcher with 2 Luzianne family size green tea bags (1 family size tea bag = 3 or 4 regular tea bags). Then I mix in 1/4 cup of sugar and 3 large stems of fresh mint. I let the mixture steep for 7 minutes, then remove the tea bags and mint stems. I let the pitcher cool off, then keep it chilled in the fridge. My preference is to serve this drink with ice and a little mint leaf garnish!

Do you have any creative ways to flavor iced tea? I'd love to hear them!

*knitting*

My new knitting project/pattern is coming along nicely... I'm in the mood for some lace knitting on small needles. This is going to be a lace patterned wrist warmer with rolled edges when I'm finished...

And my kitchen curtains are hung! I braved the heat and humidity on my bike yesterday just to pick up the curtain rods I needed...

I can't believe today is already Thursday! The farmer's market is this afternoon, but it's threatening to rain. Hopefully the clouds will pass through beforehand so I can buy my veggies! Pita pockets for dinner tonight!

DIY Project :: How to Sew a Sink Skirt

Anyone who lives in an old building will know that there are tradeoffs. Character, charm and great old details make the place awesome. But age can also mean some not-so-lovely renovations have taken place over the years or, even worse, a little bit of neglect. As I mentioned earlier, my new place is in a big old house that is around 100 years old, so it has a ton of great features like big windows, wood floors and a fireplace. The kitchen has some new cabinetry, flooring, and appliances that are just fine.... but the bathroom is a whole different story. It's a perfect storm of cheap renovations and neglectful tenants.

I came up with one inexpensive and easy solution that I was able to whip up in an hour and it really made a difference to the look of the room! A cute fabric skirt to hide the plumbing under our old sink. It's not the sink that I mind (it's sort of retro so I like it), it's the icky pipes underneath that I object too! Here's a before photo:

Before I reveal the "after" shot I'm going to walk you through the process of making the sink skirt. You'll need a sewing machine, some fabric, scissors, a flexible tape measure and a package of adhesive-backed industrial strength velcro. I found my velcro at Lowes and it was about $3 for a big box.

First measure around the front and sides of your sink and add two inches to this number. Then measure from the bottom edge of your sink to the floor and add one inch to that number. Cut your fabric to these dimensions, using the selvage edge of the fabric as the top of the skirt. Finish the raw edges of the fabric by pressing them under 1/2 and inch, then pressing them 1/2 an inch again and sewing the edge with your sewing machine.

Now, cut some pieces of velcro to attach to your skirt and to the underside of your sink (the fuzzy side of the velcro will go on your fabric skirt, and the other side will go on your sink). I placed pieces of velcro across the selvage edge of the fabric every 2 inches, stuck them on using the self-adhesive side, then sewed over it to make it extra secure. If I were to to it again, I think I would just sew a continuous strip across the top of the selvage edge. Place the other side of the velcro inside the bottom edge of your sink.

Stick the velcro together and step back to admire your new skirt (and not the plumbing!). This is great for renters because you can remove it when your move... or you can change it out with new fabric when you want a different look!

Much better!

i woke up this morning...

I woke up this morning with an idea for a new knitting pattern! Right away I knew what I wanted to do. Unusual for me, but I won't question it! It involves some pretty tiny size 2 needles and sock yarn (but it's not socks!).

It's going to be hot and humid today so I'm more than happy to spend the steamiest part of the day inside, laying low and working on this new project.

*in which I talk about my new apartment*

Love! I love our new place! After several years of living in a cookie cutter apartments I finally found one that's more my style. It's in a giant house that is 100 years old and divided into six units, each one with a different layout. That means I finally have wood floors, lots of windows and natural light, and old fashioned doors. Oh, and an outdated bathroom... but that's a trade-off I'm willing to make : )

And did I mention that it now takes me only 8 minutes to walk to the yarn shop? And 10 minutes to walk to the library? I'm in heaven!

I spent the weekend taking down the dusty old blinds (I'm not supposed to do that, but I did anyway! haha!) and sewing curtains to put in their place. I really think that nice old windows should have pretty, breezy curtains instead of dusty white blinds. The fabric in the photo below is for the kitchen curtains (still in progress because I need to get another curtain rod... finished photos to be posted later on)...

And I made a simple set of floral curtains for the living room sewn from a thrifted sheet I had in my fabric stash...

I'm planning a couple of DIY posts based on some of the projects I've been making for my own place. Meanwhile, if anyone has experience sprucing up an outdated rental bathroom I would love to hear your tips! Especially regarding less-than-lovely linoleum floors : )
