DIY for Knitters & Crocheters :: How to Organize Bits of Yarn

Knitters and crocheters know that throwing out leftover bits of yarn is crazy - you can always use them for something!  Some decorative edging, making little hearts, or tying up packages.  But we also know that it's crazy to have a million little balls of leftover yarn laying tangled up in a basket, box, or bag.  It makes us crazy when we need to find a color and have to un-knot it from the mass of yarn still in the basket.  Those little balls never stay neatly wound!

Well, gather up your tiny bits of yarn because I'm going to show you how to organize them once and for all!

This little tutorial is so simple that it hardly needs written instructions!  Just gather up your bits of yarn, wind them around wooden clothespins, and clip the loose end in the mouth of the clothespin.
Ta da!

I like wooden clothespins better than plastic ones because they have a little texture to them, which hold the yarn on the body of the clothespin without slipping off (and I just don't like plastic too much, anyway).

Now you can put your yarn back into its basket, box, or bag without it getting all ratty and tangled.  In fact, this idea is so cute you may want to display your favorite yarns in a little ceramic bowl!

This is such a great idea! It would probably take me a week to wrap all my little leftover bits this way, though, haha!

That's such a great idea! I have sooo much yarn scraps too but I have to find longer clothespins, I have some wooden ones that are shorter.

What a great idea. I do have clip clothespins on hand, so I think I will give it a try. Thanks

I would never have thought to have used clothes pegs to keep yarn organised, but it's such a simple and workable idea that it's amazing!

Would never have thought of that, i have balls of all sizes creating mess everywhere. This is something my daughter would love to do to keep her amuzes. Now for getting some pegs next time i go shopping- i only use plastic ones at home

Perfect! I was just untangling my bits of yarn yesterday. I have to do this!

Cute idea but way too organised for this messy crafter.

This is genius b/c you can also write a little note in Sharpie on the yarn name or content. I'm a newbie knitter, so I can't count on being able to know my wool from cotton. :) I've been displaying my leftovers in mini yarn balls in a glass vase, but realized I'd not be able to pick out the yarn by type for my leftover projects :)

Love it! All my little balls of yarn keep rolling around and unraveling. These are so cute, I would hang them from a wire strung across the wall above my desk.
